Ohio State University-Main Campus Summary
The following paragraph provided courtesy of wikipedia.
The Ohio State University (OSU) is a coeducational public research university in the state of Ohio. US News & World Report ranked it among the top 60 universities in the United States and the best public university in Ohio. Although Ohio operates a decentralized system of higher education, Ohio State is widely considered both within Ohio and outside of its borders to be the flagship institution of the state’s public system of higher education. The Ohio State University was founded in 1870 as a land-grant university in accordance with the Morrill Act of 1862 under the name of The Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. Initially, it was thought that one of Ohio’s two existing public universities (Ohio University and Miami University) would be designated as the land-grant institution, and each engaged in a vigorous competition to win over the state legislature. Two factors in Ohio State’s formative years would hinder the university’s immediate development: hostility from the state’s agricultural interests and competition for resources from Miami University and Ohio University. At the time of Ohio State’s creation, these institutions had been derided by then Governor Hayes as borderline sectarian colleges that, in over sixty years of history, had failed to provide Ohio with a real state university. Even then, the inherent tension of agricultural interests within the larger context of a comprehensive research university and the competition among state universities in a decentralized higher education system would, to varying degrees, remain permanent issues with which Ohio State would be forced to contend. The significant role that the fledgling university had begun to play within the state, as well as the peace that Hayes had brokered with the state’s agricultural interests, was underscored by the fact that the proposal passed without opposition despite the insistence of Ohio State’s board of trustees that neither Miami nor Ohio universities be included in the bill. Ohio State began accepting graduate students in the 1880s, with the university awarding its first master’s and doctoral degrees in 1886 and 1890 respectively. In 1906, Ohio State President William Oxley Thompson along with the university’s supporters in the state legislature put forth the Lybarger Bill with the aim of shifting virtually all higher education support to the continued development of Ohio State while funding only the “normal school” functions of Miami and Ohio University. Subsequently, Ohio State’s solidifying of its role as the state’s flagship, comprehensive university was fairly rapid, as demonstrated by its 1916 induction into the prestigious Association of American Universities. Davis, who in his 1921 inaugural address declared that, “In Ohio State University the commonwealth has an educational institution which should become the largest and best state institution in the United States. Seventy-two percent of the funds were earmarked for the Ohio State University with the remainder split between Miami University and Ohio University. Ohio State was the first university in Ohio to be extended membership into the Association of American Universities in 1916 and remains the only public university in Ohio among the organization’s sixty members. World Report’s widely read rankings of undergraduate colleges in America currently places Ohio State tied with the University of Pittsburgh as the 19th best public university and the 57th ranked overall university in America and the highest ranked public university in Ohio. China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University placed Ohio State as the 66th ranked university in the world in their 2006 Academic Ranking of World Universities. The Lombardi Program on Measuring University Performance at the University of Florida’s detailed analysis and rankings of American universities currently places Ohio State as the 26th ranked university in America, the 11th ranked public university in America and the top overall university in Ohio. Ohio State is also the only public university in Ohio to which the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has given both its highest overall classification of Doctoral/Very High Research Activity and highest undergraduate admissions classification of more selective. US News ranks the undergraduate program at Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business 17th in America and the top undergraduate business school in Ohio. The Ohio State law school is ranked by US News as the top law school in Ohio and 39th overall in America. Ohio State’s medical school is ranked as the top public medical school in Ohio and 32nd overall for research and 33rd for primary care. US News ranks Ohio State’s undergraduate engineering program as the 28th best program in America and the top undergraduate engineering program in Ohio. In a study by industry publication Dance Teacher, a survey of 100 dance department chairs in the United States and Canada ranked Ohio State’s Department of Dance as the top ranked graduate program and the second ranked undergraduate program in North America. In a recent study by Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, Ohio State was one of five universities rated as “exemplary” workplaces for junior faculty. In the last quarter century, thirty-two Ohio State faculty members have been awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, which is more than all other public and private Ohio universities combined. Since the 2000/2001 award year, thirty-nine Ohio State faculty members have been named as Fulbright Fellows, the highest of any Ohio university. Tuition for full-time, Ohio residents attending Ohio State for the 2006-2007 academic year is $8,433. For the 2006-2007 academic year, tuition at Ohio State for Ohio residents placed it as the fifth most expensive public university and slightly beneath the weighted average tuition of $8,553 among Ohio’s thirteen public four-year universities. In addition to being named a Best in the Midwest selection by The Princeton Review, Ohio State was also the only public university in Ohio to make their list of America’s 150 Best Value Colleges. In recent decades, and in response to continually shrinking state funding, Ohio State has conducted two significant multi-year fundraising campaigns. The Ohio State University is comprised of the following colleges and schools: Ohio State’s main urban campus is located in Columbus. Overall, Ohio State operates the 18th largest university research library in North America with a combined collection of over 5.8 million volumes. The university also operates several regional campuses and research facilities at: The Office of Student Affairs is responsible for many of the outside-the-classroom aspects of student life at Ohio State. The Ohio State University Marching Band (or TBDBITL, “The Best Damn Band in the Land”) is a longstanding tradition at Ohio State. The band is famous for “Script Ohio,” during which the band marches single-file through the curves of the word “Ohio” while playing the famous march “Le Regiment de Sambre et Meuse.” On August 23, 2006, it was announced that during the week of October 30 to November 2 Jon Stewart would host The Daily Show’s Battlefield Ohio: The Daily Show’s Midwest Midterm Midtacular from Ohio State’s Roy Bowen Theatre. Ohio State operates 31 on-campus residence halls divided into three geographic clusters: South Campus (site of the university’s original dormitories), North Campus (largely constructed during the post-war enrollment boom) and Olentangy Area or “The Towers.” Additionally, Ohio State offers the Honors Collegium with membership extended following the Spring of a student’s first or second year to the university’s top undergraduates. Ohio State also administers two large-scale scholarship programs to ensure access to the university to high-ability students from low-income or traditionally underrepresented groups. Ohio State has committed to offering a full-ride scholarship each academic year to at least one student from each of Ohio’s 88 counties. The Ohio Union is dedicated to enriching the student experience on and off the Ohio State University campus. It has been a center of student life at The Ohio State University for more than 50 years, providing facilities for student activities, organizations and events, and serves as an important meeting place for campus and community interaction. Student organizations at The Ohio State University provide students with opportunities to get involved in a wide variety of interest areas including academic, social, religious, artistic, service-based, diversity and many more. At the Ohio State University, there are three recognized student governments that represent their constituents. Ohio State’s intercollegiate sports teams are called the “Buckeyes” (after the state tree, the Buckeye), and participate in the NCAA’s Division I in all sports (Division I-A in football) and the Big Ten Conference in most sports. Ohio State is one of only two universities (the University of Michigan being the other) to have won a national championship in baseball, men’s basketball, and football. Ohio State operates a public television station, WOSU-TV 34 / WOSU-DT 38 (a local PBS TV station), as well as two public radio stations, WOSU-AM (NPR/BBC) and WOSU-FM (Classical) in Columbus.

Hey Anna, I want to say that you are wrong. I am going to OSU in a couple weeks and I absolutely love it! I had my campus tour during the summer before my high school senior year and it was great. I don't know where your experience here came from. The only possibility is that you met the wrong people. people here are friendly, funny, well educated, etc... and Glenda, I totally agree with you.

Hey Anna, Way to be a little too obvious. The only intention of your post was to bash Ohio State. To judge an entire university based on the actions of one person is beyond ridiculous. I graduated from Ohio State in the 80s and I was all too happy to send my daughter there. It's a fine institution that is working diligently to become one of the premier state universities in the country. Their new Student Union, R-PAC (recreational facility) and library are outstanding. My daughter is an engineering student who is actively involved in Ohio State's greek life, philanthropic activities and even works for the university as a math tutor. She loves Ohio State, as did I. OH-IO!

In the 1940's or 50's my great uncle Dr. E. E. Lewis was associated with OSC, and later supposedly donated funds to OSU to the Dr.E. E. Lewis Endowment Fund. Is there any records which can be shared regarding a Dr. EE Lewis? I would appreciate any help. He was reported to have been Dept of School Admin and something to do with a club called "edliners. Thank you

This past weekend, while on a camping trip, I and my 9 yr. old daughter had the opportunity to meet one of your alumnus. What I thought would be a wonderful opportunity to teach my daughter the benefits of being college educated turned into a lesson of how not to conduct yourself in public. I was only too glad that the rude, drunk, loud, obnoxious, prejudice, intolerant, dishonest, young woman was not my daughter. All the while, the young woman sported her Ohio State sweatshirt, letting me know where not to send my hard earned college money. Afterall, I would like my beautiful daughter to grow into a woman of class and dignity, in addition to being educated. As I was taught in the Army, "While in uniform (Ohio State shirt), you are the face of the Army.". Bad form ...

I want to express my sincere appreciation for the sportsmanship demonstrated by the you tube video regarding the upcoming football game against the U.S. Naval Academy. There are more important things than football, it is an honor to serve our country, and we appreciate your support. The odds are 100% that one of these students will die in the defense of our nation in the years to come, be that in training, in exercises around the world, or on the battle front. Give them your very best so that they are prepared for what lies ahead. May God keep all our troops and these athletes safe during these challenges we face. GO Navy! And may God Bless Ohio State. Please feel free to forward.

We visited The OSU 2 weeks ago. We are from Canton Ga. The OSU has been recruiting our daughter, due to her academics for over a year. We visited and my daughter fell in love with the campus. She was also awarded a National Buckeye Scholar Scholarship for students who are non-residents of Ohio. We were totally blowm away by the campus and all of the folks from the admissions office. The professors we met were quite impressive. The admissions staff were super (Keith Gehres). They went after my daughter alot more agressively, meetings in Alanta, follow up calls from the admssions office and actual students, email, informative mailings, etc. We received very little from Ga colleges and universities. We can't wait to reurn for freshmen orientation this summer and Fall quarter in Sept. THANKS TO THE OHIO SATE UNIVERSITY FOR GIVING OUR DAUGHTER THIS WONDERFULL OPPORTINUTY!!!!

I have been an Ohio State fan since I was about 11 years old. I live in Maine, which isn't that far away, but enough. I'm a Junior in High School and I'm definitely looking at Ohio State to pursue my academic career. Ohio State is my dream school. I am going to apply there and do my best to get in. It would be amazing to be able to go there. Every Saturday I'm watching my Buckeyes fight off another team. Go Buckeyes!!! <3

My family is going through some financial problems right now, though.I am a good student who loves science and english. I have even had my poetry published and requested for publication. But I plan to study veterinary medicine.

After watching the USC Oregan St game, the athletic director should be ashamed to have Tressel and his crew calling the shots. We should have been prepared like Oregan St. Ohio State is way too big to be so low level in intelligence.

Hi. My name is Brianna and I, like almost everyone else here, would absolutely love to attend Ohio State. I am currently a Junior in high school and I run Track & Field. I have run at the Jesse Owens Stadium twice while competing in the Division 2 State Meet. Although it is hard to get into Ohio State, I hope to become a student there and possibly try out for the track team. GO BUCKEYES! p.s. What are the possibilities of being accepted at OSU with a low ACT score, even though you have a high GPA and class rank?

was disappointed in our performance in the BCS bowl - though t coaching staff missed the boat again - Tressel seems reluctant to try other options when losing - same as the previous year when he never gave Swick a shot when it was quite clear those playing were not going to score let alone win -

I am currently attenting a small school in Chesapeake, Ohio. I have thought about going to Morehead State and Marshall recently, and then my girlfriend recommented OSU and since then i have had thoughts about attending the school because I love OSU Football and I am currently playing football, but my main sport is Track. I have also joined the reading club and FCA(Fellowship of Christian Athletes) to get scolarship offers and I would love to get one to OSU because it is a long distance from my house and I can have some money to go home sometimes. I would like to study law, but recently I have been wanting to become a teacher so in the future I can work at the school that I attend and coach football and track as well.

I have been reaseaching Alta Weiss. She attended OSUMC when it was called Sterling College of Medicine. She paid for college by being a baseball pitcher at the age of 17. She is in the Woman's Nat Baseball Hall of Fame. She was a DR and treated patients in Norwalk,OH. I am looking for some examples of her medical career and writings. Unfortunatly Norwalk Memorial Hosp has saved nothing. Nor has the local historical society.

To Karen: I have been told that the papers changing the school's name from Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College read that the new name was to be ". . . The Ohio State University . . ." Whether the T in "the" was supposed to be capitalized has been debated for years but the capitalization made it The Ohio State University.
